Slack
Connect Slack to FortyOne, create stories from conversations, ask Maya about work, and understand how access and data handling work.
What the Slack integration does
The FortyOne Slack integration helps your team move between conversation and execution without copying context by hand. After the integration is connected, your team can:
- Create a FortyOne story with the
/fortyonecommand. - Turn an existing Slack message into a story with the Create a story message shortcut.
- Ask Maya about accessible FortyOne work in a direct message or by mentioning the FortyOne app.
- Continue supported Maya and request conversations in their Slack threads.
- See permission-aware previews when supported FortyOne story or request links are shared.
FortyOne links each Slack identity to a FortyOne account before returning workspace data or creating work. The integration applies the linked person's existing workspace and team permissions.
Before you connect
You need:
- Administrator access to the FortyOne workspace.
- Permission to install apps in the Slack workspace, or help from a Slack administrator who can approve the installation.
- A FortyOne workspace and Slack workspace that represent the same team.
Only a FortyOne workspace administrator can connect or disconnect the shared Slack workspace. Individual members can connect their own Slack identity when FortyOne prompts them.
Connect a Slack workspace
Review the workspace and permissions shown by Slack. Choose the correct Slack workspace, then approve the installation.
Return to the Slack integration settings in FortyOne. The connected Slack workspace appears with a Connected status.
If Slack requires administrator approval, submit the request in Slack and complete the connection after it is approved.
Connect your personal account
FortyOne must match your Slack identity to the correct FortyOne member before you can create stories, ask Maya about workspace data, or open private story previews.
Use /fortyone, message Maya, mention the FortyOne app, or open a supported FortyOne link. If your account is not linked, FortyOne sends you a private connection link. Open it while signed in to FortyOne and confirm the connection. The one-time link expires after 15 minutes; repeat the Slack action to receive a new link if necessary.
The first time you interact with FortyOne in a Slack workspace, the app also sends you one private getting-started message. It explains how to work with Maya, create stories or requests, share previews, and continue conversations in threads. FortyOne does not post this introduction publicly or repeat it on later interactions.
Never forward your personal connection link. It is created for one Slack identity and one FortyOne workspace.
Create a story with /fortyone
Enter /fortyone in a Slack conversation. You can optionally add a title after the command:
/fortyone Prepare the customer onboarding handoffFortyOne opens a story form in Slack. Depending on the teams and fields available to your linked account, you can set:
- Title and description
- Team and workflow status
- Priority and assignee
- Labels and objective
Submit the form to create the story. FortyOne posts a confirmation with a link to the new work item.
Create a story from a Slack message
Open the More actions menu for the Slack message that contains the request or decision.
Review the title and description prepared from the source message, then choose the appropriate FortyOne team and properties.
FortyOne keeps a source link so the story can be traced back to the Slack conversation that created it.
Ask Maya in Slack
You can message Maya directly or mention the FortyOne app in a channel. Ask for project status, ownership, priorities, blockers, or next steps using the same language you would use in FortyOne.
Examples:
What is blocking the launch this week?@FortyOne summarize the work that still needs product review.Maya uses your linked FortyOne identity and the Slack conversation surface to determine what it can access. A channel response can establish a supported thread so follow-up replies keep the conversation together. Important proposed changes may require an explicit Confirm action before FortyOne applies them.
Workspace administrators can add custom guidance from the Slack integration settings to explain workspace terminology, response style, or operating rules Maya should follow.
Story and request previews
When someone shares a supported FortyOne story or request link, Slack can show a rich preview with useful work details such as status, priority, owner, or dates.
Before returning the preview, FortyOne checks the viewer's linked account and access to the work item. If the viewer has not linked an account, FortyOne provides a private connection prompt. If the linked account cannot access it, the integration does not reveal its details.
Data and privacy
FortyOne processes the Slack workspace, channel, user, command, interaction, and message data needed to deliver the feature a person invokes. Unsupported root channel messages, bot messages, edits, and replies in threads that are not connected to FortyOne are rejected before their content enters the durable messaging system.
Accepted Slack payloads and connection credentials are encrypted at rest. Conversation and assistant message content used for short-term thread continuity is retained for up to 30 days. FortyOne does not use Slack API data to train general-purpose artificial intelligence models.
To prevent the private getting-started message from repeating, FortyOne retains a one-way digest of the Slack workspace and user identity, plus the time that identity was first observed, for as long as the FortyOne workspace exists. This receipt does not contain the Slack message, Slack user ID, or Slack workspace ID.
Read the FortyOne Slack integration page for a product overview and the FortyOne Privacy Policy for the full data, retention, access, and deletion disclosures.
Disconnect Slack
As a FortyOne workspace administrator, open Settings, select Integrations, and open Slack.
Disconnecting stops slash commands, message actions, Maya responses, and work-item previews for that installation. FortyOne removes the active connection credentials and active connection records. The one-way first-use receipt described above remains so reconnecting the same integration does not repeat the getting-started message, subject to the retention described in the Privacy Policy.
Troubleshooting
The Slack workspace is waiting for approval
Your Slack organization controls who may install apps. Ask a Slack administrator to approve FortyOne, then restart or complete the connection from FortyOne settings.
FortyOne asks me to connect my account
Open the private connection link while signed in to the FortyOne account that belongs to the same workspace. If the link has expired, repeat the Slack command, mention, direct message, or preview action to receive a new one.
I cannot see a team or project detail
Slack does not grant additional FortyOne access. Confirm that your linked FortyOne account is a member of the required workspace and team. Ask a FortyOne workspace administrator to update your access if needed.
Maya does not answer in a channel
Confirm that the FortyOne app is installed, your personal account is linked, and the channel is an allowed surface for your workspace. Try a direct message to FortyOne to separate an account-link problem from a channel-access problem.
